The Palesskaya, 52 Homel socio-political center celebrated the 101st anniversary of the independence of BPR and Freedom Day.

On March 25, the Homel opposition traditionally begins the celebration of Freedom Day by visiting the grave of Timokh Vostrykau. He is buried in the village of Ramanavichy in Homel region, Radio Svaboda reports.

In 1952, Vostrykau was inserted in a small team of four men into Nalibokskaya Pushcha as a representative of the BPR Rada – to support and develop the Belarusian national movement. He was arrested by the NKVD. He was sentenced to 23 years of camps for the “treason to the Motherland.” After his release he lived in Homel, died in 2007.

Public activist Uladzimir Katsora expressed the hope that, over time, the authorities would recognize Vostrykau as a national hero. So far, his memory is honored only by the democrats. Last year, within the framework of the celebration of the BPR’s 100th anniversary, the socio-political center published the book “Adyssey of the BPR Captain” about Timokh Vostrykau’s life. The author of the book is journalist Anatol Hatouchyts.

The democrats also honored the memory of the Hero of Ukraine and the Heavenly Hundred Mikhail Zhyzneuski, laid flowers and a wreath at the place where the house of the BPR деятеля Paluta Bahdunova used to be.

Singer Volha Tsiareshchanka sang at the festive concert in the socio-political center.
