Over Hundred Bresters Protest Against Battery Plant

Opponents of the battery plant marched through the streets of Brest.

In the center of Brest, residents of the city gathered for a traditional protest against the construction of the battery plant. As the human rights activist Raman Kisliak reported to belsat.eu, there were about 120 people in total.

People came to Lenin Square, but the city authorities were already holding an event there.

“They organized some kind of a holiday on the square, forced school children come there. As a result, people stood there for a while and then decided to march through the Pushkin and Savetskaya streets to the cinema Belarus,” – Kisliak said.

According to the human rights activist, there were no incidents during the march, although the police watched the protesters all the time.

“There were no detentions today, but the activist Vital Kazak was detained the day before. I think this is due to today's event. He was invited to the police station, and then taken to the regional police department,” – Kisliak added.

The police transferred the activist Kazak from the police station to the temporary detention center, where he will remain until Monday – probably, a trial of the activist has been scheduled for this day.

Protests against the plant began in February 2018. Every tenth Brest resident signed against the construction of the plant. But the authorities are not going to meet people. The protesters were repeatedly detained, fined, imprisoned for a days. According to the protesters, the plant, which the company iPower is building, can be harmful for the neighborhood and badly affect the health of the local population.
