Remains Of 600 Jewish Ghetto Prisoners Exhumed In Brest Center

It is not excluded that up to a thousand people might be found.

On February 20, a meeting on the issue of exhuming and reburying Jewish ghetto victims was held at the Brest City Executive Committee, Viacherni Brest reports.

We remind that the remains were found within Savietskaya, Dziarzhynski, Kuibyshau streets and Masherau Avenue. The Prybuzhski Kvartal construction company started to work there.

They invited leaders of Brest Jewish communities, representatives of the investor. According to Alla Kondak, a senior inspector of the culture department of the city executive committee, the remains of six hundred Jews who were shot during the Nazi occupation have been raised. And the search battalion continues to work. It is not excluded that up to a thousand people might be found.

The leader of the Jewish community Emuna, Barys Bruk, the rabbi of the Brest Jewish religious community Chabad, Khaim Rabinovich and others unequivocally spoke in favor of reburial of the remains. They will be buried at the Paunochnyja Cemetery.

Prybuzhski Kvartal suspended the construction in the place where the human remains were found. The further fate of the project is not certain. It is not excluded that the investment contract will be completely terminated, and there will be a square instead of the residential complex.

Let us remind that on October 15−16, 1942, 16,941 people were taken from Brest ghetto to Bronnaya Hara. “In total, 28,000 Jews trapped behind the barbed wire in the ghetto. It can be assumed that the occupants caught and shot those who managed to hide in the ghetto territory, – Alla Kondak, a senior inspector of the culture department of the city executive committee, said earlier. – In the second part of the book “Memory” there are memories of the Katz sisters, who in 1942 hid in the attic of a building located nearby. They told that every day during one month and five days occupants were taking Jews there. People were stripped naked and shot, 70−80 people daily. November 20, the Katz sisters were forced to leave their shelter. Police goons robbed them, but did not handed them over to execution squads, so they managed to survive. According to the sisters, there were no less than six trenches where the shot people were buried.”

According to official information, 19 people could survive the Brest ghetto. Some of them left their memories, which describe in detail how they managed to hide and what the occupants did to those they could find.

In the 50s – 60s, human remains from this territory were reburied at the cemetery Trishinskoe, and in the 70s they were buried in Plosk. According to archival data, 363 human skeletons were found, buried in 60 coffins.
