The people are ready for any measures tro stop the harmful production.

The try-out launch of the production lines at the iPower battery plant, which is currently under construction, and against which the Brest dwellers come out to protest every weekend, will presumably be conducted in the third decade of the current month (February 21 – 28).

Activist of the European Belarus civil campaign, representative of the Belarusian National congress in Brest Andrei Sharenda commented on the situation specially for Charter97.org:

- The private firm “First Battery Company” headed by Viktar Lemiasheuski, regardless of all the violations revealed by the activists, regardless of the fact that the inspections are still in progress, and hundreds of Bresters come out to protest against the plant every weekend, decided to launch this harmful enterprise in the end.

This demonstrates one thing: the company has a reliable “cover” somewhere at the top of the Belarusian authorities. The battery plant is a direct confirmation that the Belarusian political system, which has been built for almost 25 years, is corrupted. We can say it became a mirror of the all-penetrating corruption under Lukashenka. Until this person is at power, similar enterprises threatening the health of Belarusians will be opened one after another. The state corruption under Lukashenka means that everything will be done for the benefit of a narrow clan, remaining at power, at the cost of our people’s health.

- As a Brest resident, and a civil activist – what do you suggest doing?

- We should continue our protest actions, regardless of the plant’s opening. We will continue fighting for our rights, for the health and future of our children. And, most importantly, it is necessary to switch from the struggle against the plant to the struggle against the criminal authorities, which permit opening such enterprises in the protection zones of the cities.

- How do you assess the potential for such struggle?

- During the last Sunday action, Bresters not only came out to the square, but marched along the city. This shows that the people are on the decisive mode and are ready for any measures to protect their health, the health of their loved ones and children.
