There Will Not Be Another Crimea In Belarus, There Will Be Another Afghanistan

Belarusians have 500 years of partisan tradition.

One of the leaders of the Belarusian National Congress, Mikalai Statkevich, said that in an interview to the Ukrainian Pryamy television channel.

The leader of the Belarusian opposition was asked: how much time does Lukashenka have left before the complete absorption of Belarus by Russia? And will this happen according to the Ukrainian scenario (meaning the military one) or will it be something else?

– I do not think that Belarus will be absorbed. Because our people’s most common emotion to Lukashenka, especially among his former electorate, is hatred. So, even if the dictator hated by the people tries to get another subsidies, another dose of the drug to maintain his economic collective farm by surrendering real sovereignty, this will only hasten his end.

According to opinion polls, a million of Belarusians are ready to defend their country weapons in hand. We will not allow this man, who has been selling our independence by piecemeal for 20 years, to complete this process entirely. After all, we have a 500-year tradition of partisan wars. There will not be another Crimea here – there will be another Afghanistan.

Yes, Lukashenka has been selling us by piecemeal. He has sold our language, culture, history, television space, strategic positions in the economy. But you see, in the 90s, when only 27 percent of Belarusians– a terrible figure – supported independence, when he started to conclude a “union state,” tens of thousands of people took to the streets. There were very tough clashes with the police, dozens and hundreds of wounded. We made him stop then. And now 90-95 percent of people want to be independent. They still have little hope for democracy, the wave of social and political protest is only growing. But as soon as we see the real danger, hundreds of thousands of people will take to the streets, – Mikalai Statkevich said.
