Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate: The Church of Belarus May Get Autocephaly

The Russian Orthodox Church is afraid of the will of Orthodox nations.

To provide the church of Belarus with autocephaly, the people of Belarus, its authorities and priests should apply to the Ecumenical Patriarchate with a corresponding request. Archbishop Daniel, exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Ukraine, told BBC about this.

"The scheme of autocephaly receiving for the church of Belarus should be the same as it was for Ukraine - people, government and priests should apply. Otherwise, it will be some kind of religious war, a coup in the country or in the church," Daniel says.

According to him, the Russian Orthodox Church is afraid of the will of the Orthodox peoples to express their "self-identity"; moreover, the Russian Church wants to control 15 republics of the former USSR.

"But every nation wants to found its own Orthodox church and it must have the right to do so. And we are also talking about Montenegro and Macedonia," the Archbishop said.

Earlier, Archbishop Daniel stated that the Orthodox Church of Ukraine could receive the status of patriarchate.
