Teacher: Regime Squeezes People Dry
VOLHA MAYORAVA

Official statistics say that only 14% of children in Minsk are absolutely healthy.

If you look closely at the comments on the Internet, you can see that people do not believe these figures. They say that, perhaps, something went wrong and not everything was told. The teacher Volha Mayorava spoke in the Hot Comments program on Belsat TV.

In her opinion, the reasons for the poor health of children lie in school practice and are related to the life of society.

Volha Mayorava says that "radical" reforms are needed in the education system.

In turn, officials note that Belarusian children have excess weight, weak eyesight, respiratory diseases, digestion problems, etc.

So what makes children sick? Volha Mayorava lists the reasons:

"The first is gadgets that have come into the children's lives. Children sit in school, then they return from school and again sit with gadgets. There is neither socialization, nor movement. Huge homework. Especially, for a child with average abilities or a bit lower average. In this case children have to work with tutors. As a primary school teacher, I will say that a "weak" pupil should sit at least 10 hours a day in order to have time to simply cope with the curriculum.

Standard of living in our country is rather low, especially in the regions. People save on nutrition. We all focus on children and children always get the best piece. Only this piece, which is given, becomes very small.

People save on fruits, seafood, and children do not get adequate nutrition. Hence, obesity occurs and, naturally, this affects the overall development. Besides, there's a very high level alcoholization of the population. A very large percentage of parents will prefer to buy a bottle of alcohol, rather than some useful products for their child.

This is a huge complex of social problems that society must solve. You can't just demand from the school, that it would raise the health of children in some miraculous way or by a decree. The entire system should be changed."
