Rally In Support Of Belarusian Journalists And Trade Unions Takes Place In New York Center

Belarusians held a rally on one of Manhattan's main squares.

On Saturday, August 11, 2018, Belarusians hold rally in support of journalists and trade unions in Belarus near the monument to the first president of America George Washington in Union Square, which is one of the main squares of Manhattan in New York.

We remind, that on August 7 and 8, police searched the tut.by and BelaPAN offices. The IC investigates the criminal case (Article 349) on "illegal access" to paid content of the state agency BelTA.

On August 7, 10 journalists and editors of tut.by and BelaPAN were detained: Tatsiana Karavenkava, Andrei Serada, Hanna Kaltyhina, Liudmila Chekina, Uliana Babaed, Maryna Zolatava, Halina Ulasik, Dzmitry Bobryk, Hanna Yermachonak, Yauhenia Beraziuk. Half of them were released in the evening.

August 8, the IC detained 3 Realt.by journalists: Ihar Khmara, Maryja Saroka, Alena Maslouskaya, as well as Uladzislau Kuletski, the Realt.by editor-in-chief. The police also detained Aliaksei Zhukau, the editor of the website of the newspaper Belorussians And Market, and the Deutsche Welle correspondent Pauliuk Bykouski.

On August 9, the Investigative Committee detained BelaPAN editor-in-chief Iryna Leushyna. On the same day, tut.by editors Halina Ulasik and Hanna Kaltyhina as well as BelaPAN columnist Tatsiana Karavenkava were released.

On August 10, the remaining journalists left detention centers.

We remind, that Lukashenka's regime blocked the independent information resource Charter97.org on January 24. First Information Deputy Minister Ihar Lutski confirmed the blocking. Aliakandr Karliukevich heads the Ministry of Information.
