Memorial To Unknown Insurgents Created Near Lida

The construction of the national memorial dedicated to the uprising in 1863 is about to be completed in the Lida district.

Between the villages of Mokhava and Maloye Olzhava in the Lida district, the construction of the national memorial dedicated to the uprising in 1863 is close to competion, Radio Racyja reports.

Members of the Belarusian Popular Front party from Lida and Biarozauka held another community clean-up day at the place of burial of unknown insurgents. They strengthened the previously installed stone monument and decorated it with a symbolic uprising weapons - scythes and pitchforks. The memorial is being created by joint efforts and public funds, which shows it really is the people’s memorial.

Head of the Lida regional branch of the BPF Siarhei Pantus said:

- There was a priest who used to come here from Bielahruda and serve a mass in memory of those who died and were buried in this field. Many people came, there were famous people - writers, who read poems dedicated to the insurgents. For the last three years we have also came here with pur own company, lit candles, prayed. We hope that this year the permit will finally be renewed, given that the monument has been completed this year. This would have been a decent act by the district authorities.

For the work on the creation of the national memorial "Crosses", the civil society of the Lida district was honoured with the Viktar Syrytsa award in 2017.

Commemorative events at the place of burial of unknown insurgents are planned for Sunday, July 29th.
