Were Kastus Kalinouski Remains Identified In Vilnius?

The reburial of the national hero of Belarus may take place in July.

Such information comes from the corridors of the international conference "1918 in Lithuania and Poland from the point of view of the present Central and Eastern Europe: history, politics, culture" held in Vilnius, nn.by informs.

Back in 2017, at the end of summer, on Mount Gediminas in Vilnius, the likely grave site of head of the 1863 uprising in Lithuania and Belarus Kastus Kalinouski was found.

"There is ample evidence that among the discovered remains there are remains of Kanstantsin Kalinouski," – Rimantas Jankauskas, a professor at the Department of Anatomy, Histology and Anthropology of Vilnius University, told BNS.

All this time, Lithuanian specialists searched for Kalinouski's relatives to conduct a proper examination. Jankauskas said that it would be good if the Belarusian authorities allowed to exhume the body of Kalinouski's brother Viktar, who is buried in Belarus.

Kalinouski's relatives were looked for to conduct a genetic analysis. Perhaps, it gave the results.

It is unofficially noted that the reburial of the remains of Kastus Kalinouski may already take place at the cemetery of Ross on July 6. In the near future, a press conference on this issue may be held in Lithuania.

Recently, the remains of another rebel, Zygmunt Serakovsky, were also found in Vilnius. There is almost no doubt that this is Serakovsky, since his engagement ring was found.

Kastus Kalinouski is the leader of the uprising of 1863-1864 on the territory of Belarus and Lithuania. He published newspaper Muzhytskaya Prauda in the Belarusian language.

Kalinouski was hanged at Lukishki in Vilnius on March 22, 1864. He was 26 years old.

Kastus Kalinouski became one of the symbols of the struggle of the Belarusians for their independence and identity. At present, young people depict Kalinouski in graffiti, on T-shirts, tattoos. In Minsk, there is a collection of signatures for the opening of the monument to Kalinouski.
