Jaromir Stetina: Blocking Of Charter-97 Shows That Human Rights Are Not Respected In Belarus
Jaromir Stetina

The EU's relations with Belarus are impossible in such conditions.

MEP for Czech Republic Jaromir Stetina stated this at the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg:

– I understand that good EU-Belarus relations are important, but I also understand that these relations should be good only if human rights are respected in Belarus. Obviously, human rights are not respected in Belarus.

Let me single out one clear example: Charter-97, the site that has been working in Belarus for many years and which was recently blocked by Lukashenka. The name "Charter-97" comes from the name of the Czechoslovak anti-totalitarian movement Charter-77. Among others, Vaclav Havel took part in its creation. Therefore, Czech and Slovak MEPs from the EPP group (European People's Party) have sent a letter to EU High Representative Mogherini and European Commissioner Hahn asking the European Commission to concern itself with this serious violation of freedom of speech in Minsk.

We remind that the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the situation in Belarus at a meeting in Strasbourg on Thursday.

The resolution expresses regret over the persecution of independent journalists and mass media in Belarus during local elections. The blocking of the information portal Charter-97 and the beating of Andrei Kozel, the journalist of the Belsat TV channel, are given as examples. The European Parliament urged to immediately unblock Charter97.org and to abandon measures that threaten freedom of speech.

On January 24, Lukashenka's regime blocked the independent information resource Charter97.org. The blocking was confirmed by the First Deputy Minister of Information Ihar Lutski. The Ministry of Information is headed by Aliaksandr Karliukevich.
