Take Courage, People! Summer Comes Soon!
Iryna Khalip

You just have to go and take it away.

But, of course, spring comes first. Scientists believe the vernal equinox signals its arrival, but for us the spring begins on March 25. Our country is so unusual and life is so amazing that the astronomical laws act in their own way - not like everywhere else.

Just recall: the spring comes after Freedom Day. It's still gloomy, slushy, and cold before it; it is almost six months of this very gloominess and slushness stand behind, and it seems it will last forever. But after Freedom Day the spring comes at once. It not just comes but attacks. And it inspires such desperate hope that it is enough till the next spring in the worst years. And by the way, it's been like that for a hundred years.

This is the event of the year - the 100th anniversary of Belarus. We have survived despite wars, famine, repressions and dispossession, the Bolsheviks of the past and kolkhoz minors of the present. Is the outgoing year a great one with its anniversary of BPR, isnt't it? I'm not talking about anniversary dancing in the fenced area, I'm talking about history. A hundred years ago courageous and noble Belarusians founded our country. The way it should be: modern, European, democratic. That is, we already have the main thing, hung on the Christmas tree by the ancestors, not broken, not destroyed, not laid on the bottom of the box. It's our country.

For a hundred years this gift has been stolen, trampled in a snowdrift, or burned. But it revived. And now, perhaps, no one will take it away. Although greedy and nasty guys can't reach it, anyway. We hold it tight. We realize this is the dearest gift our ancestors could give us. And we are ready to shield it. It has a secret, like a locked house, the key to which is lost.

The house represents our independence. Freedom is the key to it. They go together. And we were so excited about independence, that we dropped our freedom somewhere. And now we have the house, but it can't be opened. Strangers can be easily beaten aside, but we have no way in as well. We are freezing cold on the porch and waiting for the summer. Just in case we're looking around, watching if anyone wants to seize the house and live high there. And we peer into the blurry windows: to see if anybody is looking at us from there, or if big-hearted shadows of our ancestors give us a hint where the key hides. But they are silent. They look at us with love, bitterness and hope. They cannot help us anymore. It's our time to act.

We just need to find this damn key. We had it in our hands in 1991. Do you remember? We got the house and the key, even if it was owned by many strangers, but it was returned to owners. We joyfully explored it, washed floors and walls, added kitchen utensils and furniture, arranged parties and shared salt. We were so exited that the key was lost. And kolkhoz cheeky persons picked it up. But they can't keep the house clean, it's troublesome, and it needs wise approach. So they are wandering around, shitting around, screaming out patriotic songs, and inviting the neighboring rabble. So we don't even need to look for treasure, make assumptions, play quests in search of the key. We know where it is. You just have to go and take it away.

And then the summer finally comes.
