Lukashenka vs Business: Most Famous Quotations

From “lice-bitten fleas” and “blood-sucking leeches” to the calls not to steal and not to be scum.

An astonishing confession made by Lukashenka ten years ago has been reported recently thanks to the column of Viktar Zhuk, published in the business media “Man of Business”, Solidarity writes.

- Do you know that I am the first Belarusian businessman? - Lukashenka asked him after the press-conference with the chief editors.

According to Lukashenka, in 1985 Gorbachev allowed lease contracts, and he was the first who implemented this system in the state-owned farm “Haradzets” in the republic.

Let us recall how the attitude of the “first businessman in Belarus” to entrepreneurs has transformed within the 24 years of his sole rule.

“Small and medium business has great potential, is characterized with flexibility and the ability to urgently react to the changes in the market conjuncture, and create new jobs. So, we need to stimulate it, not destroy.” Aliaksandr Lukashenka, 2010
“They are making strikes because they are not allowed to take abroad fuel, cigarettes at some ridiculous price, sell it all there and thus earn money. We used to call them jobbers. That’s what they are.” Aliaksandr Lukashenka, 2011
“How would the people call you if you only make money for yourself, without keeping afloat your home state, which provides at least security for you? Don’t steal! Don’t be scum!” Aliaksandr Lukashenka, 2015
“Their rosy years expired on January 1, now it’s time to work in equal conditions, with corresponding documentation.” Aliaksandr Lukashenka, 2016
“I even insist that businessmen should participate in politics. However, you should remember so that not to take offense in the future: politics have other laws and rules.” Aliaksandr Lukashenka, 2017
