Residents of Brest and several villages of Brest region believe that the enterprise threatens their health.

Residents of several villages in Brest region are gathering an initiative group to hold a local referendum on the construction of a battery factory near Brest, human rights activist Raman Kisliak has told tut.by.

The initiative group is being made up from residents of the region. The issue of construction of a battery factory near Brest will be brought to the referendum.

If the initiative group is registered, its members will be able to collect signatures, Raman Kisliak says.

“To initiate a referendum, it is necessary to collect signatures of at least 10% of citizens who have the right to vote and reside in the territory of Brest region,” – the human rights activist adds.

The battery plant is being built on the Airport industrial site in the Brest free economic zone by the LLC iPpower. Residents of Brest and several villages of Brest region believe that the enterprise threatens their health. From February 25th, every Sunday, opponents of the battery factory construction come to Lenin Square in Brest, where they communicate and exchange the latest news about the construction of the enterprise.

On April 29, the authorities sanctioned a rally “Brest Women Against Lead” on the outskirts of Brest, in the Park of the Warriors-Internationalists, attended by about two thousand people. Since then, repeated attempts of the opponents to obtain permission to hold a rally have not succeed – the city authorities did not give the permission, referring to the fact that other events had been planned for the announced dates.
