Protesters Against Battery Plant Detained In Brest

Police detained Valer Faminski and Aliaksandr Voblaka, the Brest activists protesting against the battery factory, Radio Svaboda reports.

They were summoned to the office just at the time of Sunday's action, which was held on the main square of Brest. As human rights activist Uladzimir Vialichkin said, protocols were drawn up against Faminski and Voblaka for participating in a mass rally. They'll be tried on Monday.

We remind you, that the protests against the battery factory have been held in Brest every Sunday for several months.

The last two weeks, detentions of the most active protesters and bloggers who support them began.

A half dozen people were detained at the rally on October 14. Mikalai Statkevich, one of the leaders of the Belarusian National Congress, was among them. He was sentenced to 5 days in jail.

The bloggers Aliaksandr Kabanau and Siarhei Piatrukhin, who came to the square with a poster against the plant, were sentenced to the same term. During the action on October 21, the bloggers were under arrest.

In addition to them, Dzimian Lepiasevich, one of the protest leaders, was detained on October 20. The police detained him when he was at home in the evening. It became known that he would be kept in the police station until Monday, and then he would be tried.

Also, during the week some activists received summons demanding to come to the police station on Sunday, just in time when an action takes place on the square.
